A set of County Durham football fans have been praised after making a 520-mile round trip to watch their team just a few days before Christmas. 

On December 23, supporters of Spennymoor Town Football Club made the mammoth journey to Hereford Football Club to watch their beloved team - despite the weather being less than ideal and the road networks full of pre-Christmas traffic. 

In total, 43 Spennymoor fans made the impressively long journey to the South West of England for the fixture, which turned out to be a 1-2 loss to Herford. 

Spennymoor, who are in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football, find themselves 15th in the table, having lost four games on the bounce, including their last game at home to Chorley, which they lost 0-2. 

Despite them playing against Chorley again on Saturday (December 30), it was Spennymoor fans' determination to get to their game at Hereford that has been winning plaudits.

Appearing on the non-league fan page The Oldham Groundhopper, the social media page was particularly complimentary about the huge effort that the fans had made. 

Posting on social media, the page said: "My supporters of the week are.....The 43 Spennymoor Town supporters who made the 490+ mile round trip to Hereford. A fantastic away following in the 6th tier."

The comment section of the page was also full of praise for Spennymoor, with one person saying: "Small but dedicated bunch of away followers, good bunch of lads," while another added: "Absolutely tremendous to see. That's what true football is all about."
