How did the players fare in Sunderland’s 3-0 home defeat to Coventry City?
SUNDERLAND (4-1-4-1):
4 Patterson: Should have done much better with the cross that led to Coventry’s third goal
5 Huggins: Had a tough day defensively – and left the field on a stretcher after suffering yet another significant injury blow
4 O’Nien: Got himself into a right mess in the build-up to Coventry’s opening goal, with his game going off the rails from that point onwards
5 Ballard: Won most of the aerial balls that came into the box, but struggled to deal with Coventry’s threat on the floor
4 Hume: Couldn’t contain Coventry’s attacking down their right and wasn’t really a factor going forward down the flank
4 Ekwah: Failed to control the central-midfield area, and gave the ball away cheaply on a number of occasions
5 ROBERTS: Dribbled his way into a couple of decent positions, but was unable to find a way past Collins in the Coventry goal
4 Neil: Struggled when out of possession, with Coventry’s players driving forward effectively in the second half
5 Bellingham: Didn’t have the best of days with Jude watching on from the stands – too many opportunities were squandered
4 Clarke: Had two or three half-chances, but fired pretty much all of his shots straight at the Coventry keeper
4 Ba: Doesn’t convince as a false nine, and wasted a golden opportunity when he skied his shot in the first half
Subs:
Mayenda (for Ekwah, 71)
Aouchiche (for Ba, 71)
Seelt (for Huggins, 85)
(not used): Bishop (gk), Triantis, Rigg, Dack, Burstow, Rusyn.
COVENTRY (4-1-4-1):
Collins 8; van Ewijk 6, Thomas 8, Kitching 7, Bidwell 7; Allen 6 (Latibeaudiere 68, 6); Sakamoto 7, O’HARE 8 (Palmer 68, 7), Sheaf 6 (Eccles 41, 6), Wright 8 (Godden 85); Simms 7 (Dasilva 68, 5).
Subs (not used): Wilson (gk), Banks, McFadzean, Ayari.
Man Of The Match: CALLUM O’HARE – The Coventry midfielder caused Sunderland a series of problems and produced a fine finish for his side’s second goal.
