EDDIE Howe has eased concerns that Dan Ashworth could leave for Manchester United, saying Newcastle's highly rated and hugely important sporting director is "here for the long term".
Ashworth - who joined the Magpies just over a year ago - has reportedly been identified as a top target for INEOS' Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is in the process of completing a 25% purchase of Manchester United.
Ratcliffe's key associate Sir Dave Brailsford will be tasked with heading up a new team overseeing football operations and Ashworth is said to be the man they want in charge at Old Trafford.
But while Howe hasn't spoken directly to Ashworth about the speculation, he says he has "no doubts" about the sporting director's commitment to the Magpies.
"Of course I've spoken to Dan but not necessarily about that," he said.
"It's very difficult to comment on speculation, whether that be a player or someone in Dan's position. I've got no doubt that Dan is here for the long term but it's probably a question for Dan rather than me."

Ashworth - who has been linked with Manchester United in the past - made his name as the FA's director of elite development before joining Brighton as technical director, where he again impressed.
He joined Newcastle last year and has played an integral role in the club's development over the past 12 months.
Howe said: "I think whenever someone is in the role of importance that Dan is, hugely important and he's done a really good job in helping us in loads of different ways, building departments, the training ground, he's connected with everything that goes on in terms of the decision making at the football club.
"He's hugely important and has been a really calming influence behind the scenes, his vast experience has really helped."
