How did the players fare in Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Chelsea?
CHELSEA (4-2-3-1):
Petrovic 6; Disasi 4 (Maatsen 78), Silva 7, Badiashile 4, Colwill 4 (Gusto 46, 6); Fernandez 5 (Broja 32, 6), Caicedo 6; Palmer 7, GALLAGHER 8, Sterling 5 (Mudryk 78); Jackson 4 (Nkunku 69, 6).
Subs (not used): Bettinelli (gk), Bergstrom (gk), Gilchrist, Matos.
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
7 Dubravka: Made a number of good saves, the pick of which denied Sterling, but didn’t really come close to saving any of the spot-kicks
6 Krafth: Took a couple of hefty blows, but kept on battling away and made a number of important tackles
6 Botman: Didn’t really look troubled during his 45 minutes on the field – hopefully there will be no ill effects from his outing
8 LASCELLES: Performed superbly at the heart of the back four – won everything that came his way and barely gave Jackson a kick
7 Livramento: Can hold his head high after returning to his former home – was never really beaten on the outside
6 Longstaff: Worked extremely well, but might have done better in terms of holding on to the ball in the second half
7 Guimaraes: Gave absolutely everything at the heart of midfield and casually dispatched his spot-kick into the net
6 Miley: Looked good whenever he was on the ball, but wasn’t always comfortable when being forced to defend
5 Almiron: His work-rate couldn’t be faulted, but Newcastle needed him to retain possession in the closing stages
7 Wilson: Produced a brilliant finish to open the scoring and also held his nerve to score in the shoot-out
5 Gordon: Couldn’t really trouble the Chelsea defence prior to being replaced at the start of the second half
Subs:
3 Trippier (for Krafth, 46): Suffered another bad night – was badly at fault for Chelsea’s goal and missed his penalty in the shoot-out
7 Burn (for Botman, 46): Dovetailed effectively with Lascelles after coming on at the heart of the back four for the second half
5 Ritchie (for Gordon, 51): Sealed his side’s fate when his penalty was at the perfect height for Petrovic to make a diving save
(not used): Karius (gk), Gillespie (gk), Dummett, Hall, A Murphy.
Man Of The Match: JAMAAL LASCELLES – The Newcastle skipper did not deserve to finish on the losing team, such was the quality of his defending.
