How did the players fare in Newcastle United's 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund?
BORUSSIA DORTMUND (4-2-3-1):
Kobel 6; Sule 7, Hummels 7, Schlotterbeck 7, Ryerson 6; Sabitzer 8, Ozcan 6; BRANDT 8, Nmecha 7, Adeyemi 7 (Reus 81); Fullkrug 7 (Moukoko 86).
Subs (not used): Meyer (gk), Lotka (gk), Blank, Bensebaini, Wolf, Reyna, Malen, Haller, Bynoe-Gittens.
NEWCASTLE (4-5-1):
8 POPE: Kept Newcastle in the game with at least four excellent saves – is having a fine season in the Champions League
6 Trippier: Looked better on the right-hand side than when he was switched to the left – his set-piece delivery wasn’t great though
5 Lascelles: Not one of the defender’s better games as he struggled to deal with the movement and physicality of Fullkrug
5 Schar: Didn’t really look comfortable defensively, and wasn’t able to make any of his surging runs out of defence
4 Hall: Struggled on his first Champions League start, picking up an early booking and failing to cut out the cross for Dortmund’s opener
6 Livramento: Tried his best in an attacking role before the break – looked good as an attacking full-back in the second half
5 Longstaff: Never really got to grips with the Dortmund midfield as he struggled to get time or space on the ball
5 Guimaraes: His commitment couldn’t be questioned, but he wasn’t really a factor in a creative sense
6 Willock: Was one of Newcastle’s better players as they chased the game in the second half – made a couple of decent runs
4 Joelinton: Wasted the Magpies’ best chance of the game as he failed to find the target with a close-range header
5 Wilson: Did plenty of running in the first half, but failed to threaten the Dortmund goal before he was replaced at the break
Subs:
7 Gordon (for Wilson, 46): Was a bright presence in the second half – Howe clearly feels he needs to limit his workload though
6 Almiron (for Hall, 46): Came close with a shot that whistled wide and added some energy in the second half
L Miley (for Willock, 81)
(not used): Dubravka (gk), Karius (gk), Dummett, de Bolle, Parkinson.
Man Of The Match: JULIAN BRANDT – The Dortmund midfielder caused problems all evening and took his goal superbly late on.
