EX-Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock is reportedly in line to replace Gareth Ainsworth as QPR boss.

Ainsworth was sacked on Saturday evening after Rangers lost to league leaders Leicester City, their sixth defeat on the bounce.

And according to the Telegraph, Warnock is set to take charge until the end of the season, with his appointment reportedly expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

Despite claiming after leaving Boro that he'd finally retired, the 74-year-old returned to the dugout with Huddersfield Town last season. He led the Terriers to survival against the odds but was replaced by Darren Moore in September, and made it clear afterwards that he wanted another job. That now looks likely to come at Loftus Road, where he's previously had two spells in charge.

Confirming Ainsworth's sacking, QPR CEO Lee Hoos said: “Making a call such as this is never easy. Many supporters have told me in recent months that they have never wanted someone to succeed more than Gareth, which is an indication of the fondness everyone associated with QPR has for him.

“Unfortunately, results this season haven’t gone the way we all wanted and we feel a change is necessary.

“Gareth has been a pleasure to work with from the moment he arrived and I am truly sorry this has not worked out as we all had hoped.”
