SOUTHAMPTON are said to have admitted defeat in their bid to sign Patrick Roberts from Sunderland on deadline day.

Saints made an audacious late move for the former Manchester City forward on Thursday night, offering £3m up-front with a further £2m in guaranteed add-ons.

Roberts is out of contract at Sunderland at the end of the season but the Black Cats deemed Southampton's offer well below their valuation and, say Sky, rejected the bid. Roberts now looks set to stay at Sunderland beyond the 11pm deadline.

And having already signed Mason Burstow and Nazariy Rusyn on deadline day, the Black Cats look set to make two further additions in the coming hours.

Sky have pictured Adil Aouchiche and Timothee Pembélé arriving at the Academy of Light together ahead of completing permanent moves.

Aouchiche is a 21-year-old midfielder who will arrive from Lorient, while PSG's Pembélé is a right-back. He looks set to replace Lynden Gooch, who is still expected to complete his move to Stoke City.

Ross Stewart's Southampton move is still expected to go through before the deadline.

Danny Batth's future remains uncertain, however after a Cardiff switch fell through and at this stage it still remains to be seen whether Alex Pritchard will get a move.
