MICHAEL Carrick has told of his delight after Middlesbrough completed the signing of Lewis O'Brien.

The Nottingham Forest midfielder has joined Boro on a season-long loan deal.

O'Brien, 24, was in demand this summer, with Sheffield United, Leeds United and Coventry City among the clubs linked with the former Huddersfield Town man.

Carrick said:  “Lewis has tasted success before and we’re delighted to have him on board.

“He’s got good experience, he’s a good age, and he offers something different to what we have here.

“His arrival gives us greater options, and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

O'Brien has bags of experience, having made more than 200 career appearances. He starred for Huddersfield as Carlos Corberan's side reached the Championship play-off final in the 2021/22 season before a move to Nottingham Forest, who beat the Terriers in the final.

He was one of 29 signings for Forest last season and the switch to the City Ground didn't work out. A loan to Blackburn fell through in January, but he then joined DC United and impressed in the MLS.

Strengthening in midfield was a priority for Boro, who have been working on the O'Brien deal for a number of weeks.

He'll be followed through the door by Sam Greenwood, who is joining from Leeds United on a season-long loan. Boro are continuing their efforts to sign a striker.
