RYAN Fraser is in talks with Southampton, with the out of favour Newcastle winger in line to join the Championship club on a season-long loan deal.
Fraser has been out of the picture at Newcastle and training with the Under-21s since early this year and there's no prospect of the 29-year-old forcing his way back into Eddie Howe's plans.
Celtic and Leeds United have been linked with a move for Fraser this summer, but Southampton are now favourites to sign the former Bournemouth man.
"There may be something with Ryan happening regarding Southampton," said Howe on Friday morning when asked for an update on the future of the senior players who don't feature in his plans, with Isaac Hayden and Jeff Hendrick also falling into that category.
"Apart from that, that's all I know."
Newcastle confirmed the signing of Lewis Hall from Chelsea earlier this week. Howe previously said that the capture of the defender would bring an end to United's summer business, and as things stand he doesn't expect that to change in the final week of the window.
He said: "It's still the case at the moment. Unless something happens to a couple of players in one position before the window shuts, we won't be adding to the squad."
