LUKAS ENGEL has become Middlesbrough’s latest summer signing after completing a move from Danish Silkeborg.
Who is the left-back who has moved to Teesside as the replacement for last season’s loanee, Ryan Giles?
Born in Kastrup, a suburb of the Danish capital, Copenhagen, Engel began his career in the youth ranks of fifth-tier club Kastrup Boldklub.
After two years of playing in Kastrup Boldklub’s senior team, Engel was signed by Fremad Amager, who play in the second tier in Denmark. He continued his development there, primarily playing as a left winger.
Engel got his chance in the Danish top-flight in 2021 when he was signed by Velje. He made 34 top-flight appearances before being loaned to Silkeborg in January 2022.
The 24-year-old’s move to Silkeborg, which was made permanent when he signed a five-year deal, was the making of him, with the switch from left wing to left-back under head coach Kent Nielsen, a former Aston Villa player, helping take his career to another level.
A former Denmark Under-21 international, Engel is an attacking full-back in the mould of Giles, who did so well for Boro last season. He claimed 16 assists in his last two full seasons in the Danish top-flight, and has already added another one to his tally during the current campaign.
Engel’s pass completion rate with Silkeborg last season was extremely impressive. He attempted 360 passes last term, with a successful completion rate of 81 per cent. He delivered 92 crosses over the course of the campaign, and had the highest ‘expected assist’ rating in the Silkeborg team.
