TONY Mowbray hopes to give Bradley Dack his Sunderland debut in the Carabao Cup first round tie against Crewe Alexandra.
Dack was an unused substitute in Saturday's 1-1 draw with RCD Mallorca at the Stadium of Light, with Mowbray revealing afterwards that he wants the attacking midfielder to get some more football-specific training under his belt before he gives the former Blackburn man his first taste of action.
Dack has spent the bulk of the summer training on his own and although he's been working hard with a private trainer to maintain his fitness, he's lacking sharpness.
Mowbray wants Dack to get a full week of training in this week and while an appearance against Ipswich in next Sunday's Championship opener is unlikely, the head coach plans to field the 29-year-old two days later in the League Cup,
"It's great that the club has brought attacking reinforcements in," said Mowbray.
"Dack just needs a couple of weeks to get up to playing speed. He played at the end of last season but hasn't had any pre-season and has been training on his own with a physical instructor. That would have been a lot of straight line running.
"He needs some football training so we'll give him that for the next few weeks.
"We'll probably target the League Cup game to see if we can get him on the pitch then and if we can then get him upto speed to play in the Championship. Hopefully it won't be too long."

Mowbray was pleased with his side's efforts against Mallorca on Saturday, with the Black Cats now planning for their final friendly of the summer at Hartlepool United on Tuesday.
"1-1 was about right," said Mowbray.
"We played against a good team. It's good to play against a team that should be better than us with their league status and where they finished. We've played a lot of teams from the start of pre-season that I would hope we'd be better than.
"Today was a good test and challenge and one I felt we stood up to."
