JOE ANDERSON has left Sunderland to join League One side Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan.

Anderson was part of the Sunderland squad that completed a three-game tour of the United States at the weekend, but has moved to Shrewsbury following his return to England.

The 22-year-old defender joined the Black Cats in January, making a permanent move from Everton.

He made his Championship debut as a substitute in February's 1-1 draw with Millwall, and went on to make three more substitute appearances over the course of last season.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: "Joe has settled within the first-team squad since his arrival in January and now is the right time for us to seek an opportunity for him to play regularly.

"This move will allow him to continue his development in a competitive senior environment and we hope that step allows him to return at some point and challenge for a place in our team.

"We look forward to supporting his progress closely throughout the forthcoming campaign and wish him well."
