EDDIE Howe believes "high level" summer recruit Sandro Tonali will get even better at Newcastle - though it's not yet clear exactly what his role will be in the Magpies midfield.
Tonali is a full Italy international and has already won Serie A and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League with AC Milan, but, still just 23, Howe says the midfielder's best years are ahead of him.
As United prepare for the Champions League this season as well as again challenging at the top of the Premier League, Howe was keen to add what he described as "elite" players to his squad - and he believes Tonali certainly fits that bill.
Howe said: "I think he's a high level player. He has some great experiences already for such a young player. He's won the Italian league and this season got to the Champions League semi-final. He's a full Italian international. He brings a wealth of pedigree. And he's a player of huge potential, his best years are ahead of him."
Howe will see how the summer and pre-season plays out before deciding on Tonali's specific role in Newcastle's midfield. The Italian is comfortable as an advanced midfielder but is more likely to play deeper for the Magpies, which will give Bruno Guimarães some more attacking freedom.
"He has versatility in his game," said Howe of Tonali.
"He can play various roles for us. We'll wait and see as we work with him more where he fits into what we do but I think we're bringing a top player to the group and I'm delighted to add the competition and depth we need this season."
Tonali is the only senior arrival so far this summer, but Newcastle this week confirmed that Loris Karius and Paul Dummett had both agreed contract extensions at St James' Park.
Dummett didn't play a single game last season, while Karius' only appearance came in the Carabao Cup final, but both are key men, said Howe, who was delighted the pair signed up for the coming campaign.

"They were two really important players last year," said Howe.
"Loris came in off the back of not training a huge amount before he signed but we saw rapid improvement in his goalkeeping in the time he spent with our coaches and with us. I'm delighted with his application and work.
"He played in the cup final and did very well so he'll be a valuable part of our goalkeeping team this year.
"Paul has been with the club a number of years and is a Newcastle man through and through. And he has versatility as well, he can play various positions for us.
"Behind the scenes last year he was incredible with his backing of the players, how he trained, his application with what we asked him to do. We're delighted both are staying and hopefully they can enjoy the season."
