SANDRO TONALI’S move to Newcastle United is edging towards completion, with the AC Milan midfielder undergoing a medical in Romania ahead of his move to St James’ Park.

The Magpies have reached an agreement with Milan for the 23-year-old midfielder, with the total deal understood to be worth around €70m once add-ons are included. That would break the existing transfer record for Italian football, which stands at the £50m Chelsea paid to sign Jorginho from Napoli.

Newcastle have also agreed personal terms with Tonali and his representatives, with the midfielder set to sign a six-year contract at St James’ Park.

Tonali was earning around £70,000-a-week at AC Milan, and the Magpies are believed to be almost doubling his wages, which would make him Newcastle’s highest-paid player.

The Italy international is currently in Romania, where he is skippering Italy Under-21s in the European Championships.

Tonali claimed an assist on Thursday evening as the Italians opened their group campaign with a controversial 2-1 defeat to France that saw a number of debatable refereeing decisions influence the result of the game in the absence of VAR.

Newcastle have sent a senior delegation to Romania that includes their head of recruitment, Steve Nickson, who was also part of the negotiating team featuring sporting director Dan Ashworth that conducted talks in Milan earlier this week.

The Italian media are reporting that Tonali has left Italy’s training camp to attend a private medical facility in the Romanian city of Cluj where his tests will take place.

He is reportedly being accompanied by his representatives, Guiseppe Riso and Marianna Mecacci, who have been key players in negotiating the deal that should see Tonali become Newcastle’s first summer signing.

Provided there are no issues with the medical, the midfielder could be confirmed as a Magpies player over the weekend, although his international duties mean he will be given an extended break and he is unlikely to join up with the rest of the Newcastle squad for the start of pre-season training at the start of next month.
