LUIS Semedo joined Jobe Bellingham in explaining that it was Sunderland's faith and record with young players that led to the striker choosing to join the Black Cats this summer.

When Bellingham completed his move from Birmingham City earlier this week, the midfielder told of the attraction in joining a club where the "opportunity for young players to progress is clear".

That was also a major factor in Semedo, known as Hemir, opting for Sunderland. The 19-year-old was in-demand when it became clear he was going to leave Benfica, with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman saying it was "not easy" to sign the frontman "considering the level of interest in him".

But transfer targets have clearly taken note of Sunderland's vision and how young players are progressing so well at the Stadium of Light.

In his first interview as a Sunderland player, Hemir said: "This a big move for me and I'm very excited.

"Sunderland have a lot of young players and I think it's good for me in my development.

"I'm excited to see my new teammates, the fans, the stadium and to start the new season."
