SUNDERLAND have continued their impressive start to the summer transfer window by completing the capture of promising Portuguese striker Luis Semedo.

The 19-year-old, who is known as Hemir, has signed a five-year-deal with the Black Cats after joining for an undisclosed fee from Benfica.

Sunderland beat several clubs to the signing of the teenage frontman, who has featured for Benfica B and the Portuguese giants' Under-23 side over the course of the last two seasons, scoring 28 goals in 61 games.

Hemir said: "This is a big move for me and I am very excited to be here. Sunderland AFC have a lot of young players playing an important part in the team and I think this will be really good for my personal development.

"I’m excited to meet my new team mates, see the stadium and experience the fans.”

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman added: “Hemir is very talented young player who’s motivated to develop and progress. It was not an easy decision for him to leave a club where he has been since eight years of age, and equally it was not an easy acquisition for us considering the level of interest in him.

"He will complement our existing options in the final third and he possesses some great physical and technical attributes, so we are really happy he’s chosen to continue his career with SAFC.”

The towering striker will link up with his new Sunderland teammates when they return for pre-season Monday, June 26.

Hemir's arrival is the latest boost for the Black Cats, who have been quick off the mark in the summer transfer window. Nectar Triantis has joined the club from Central Coast Mariners, while Jobe Bellingham this week completed his switch from Birmingham City.

Sunderland have also moved to tie Trai Hume and Dennis Cirkin down on new long-term deals.
