NEWCASTLE United's Anthony Gordon is part of the England Under-21 squad for this summer's European Championships, but there was disappointment for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, who was left out.

Patterson was rewarded for his superb season with the Black Cats with a place in the provisional squad and played in a behind closed doors friendly against Japan at the weekend.

But the 23-year-old was left out of the final 23-man squad, with boss Lee Carsley instead selecting West Brom's Josh Griffiths, Brighton's Carl Rushworth and James Trafford, the Manchester City keeper who spent last season on loan at Bolton. Trafford was first choice for most of the qualifying campaign.

Gordon was always going to be named in Carsley's squad and believes his summer of action will benefit Newcastle next season.

The former Everton midfielder admitted he wasn't fit enough when he joined Newcastle in January but says the European Championships will ensure he's up to speed and sharp for the start of next season.

"I feel like I have a big summer coming up to put myself in a really good position next year," Gordon said last month.

"I've got the Under-21 Euros so physically I'm going to be on it like never before. Out there I'm absolutely blowing. In this team you have to be so fit, the gaffer demands so much. That's something I probably didn't expect or didn't know, but I know for next year so I'll be on it."

Folarin Balogun is a notable absentee following his recent decision to represent the United States, leaving ex-Middlesbrough loanee Cameron Archer as the only recognised striker in the squad.

Archer impressed on Teesside after joining Boro from Aston Villa in January, scoring 11 goals for Michael Carrick's side.

Ex-Boro defender Djed Spence has been left out. Spence joined Tottenham last summer but wasn't part of former boss Antonio Conte's plans and joined Rennes on loan in January.

Manchester City's Rico Lewis is a surprise omission from the squad, despite playing 18 times for Pep Guardiola's treble-winning side.

Carsley has plenty of Premier League experience in his squad, with Morgan Gibbs-White, Emile Smith Rowe, Oliver Skipp, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott all included.

The tournament takes place in Georgia and Romania between June 21 and July 8, with England facing Czech Republic, Israel and Germany in Group C.
