FORMER Sunderland co-owner Charlie Methven has agreed a takeover deal with League One side Charlton Athletic.

Methven, who worked alongside Stewart Donald at the Stadium of Light, is a director of SE7 Partners, which has agreed a deal with current Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard.

The former Sunderland chief, who left his role as a director with the Black Cats in December 2019, is a co-director of SE7 Partners along with Edward Warwick.

His takeover at the Valley remain subject to EFL approval, but should be ratified ahead of the start of the new season.

“We’ll now work with SE7 Partners and the EFL to meet the league requirements, which is a process that can take some time,” said Charlton chief executive Peter Storrie, in an interview with his club’s website. “In the meantime, the day-to-day running of the club will not be impacted.”

Methven was part of the Madrox group that bought Sunderland from Ellis Short in the summer of 2018, appearing alongside Donald at the pair’s introductory press conference at the Stadium of Light.

He was a prominent figure in the ‘Sunderland Til I Die’ documentary series on Netflix, but while he was initially well received on Wearside, his popularity plummeted after a perceived lack of investment resulted in the Black Cats struggling to get out of League One.

Methven also made some disparaging remarks about Sunderland’s fanbase that alienated him further, and he sold his remaining five per cent stake in the club to Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Juan Sartori last summer.
