NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
8 Dubravka: Made two excellent first-half saves to keep out efforts from Thiago and Sterling as he made his first league start of the season
6 Trippier: Was unfortunate to end up deflecting Sterling’s effort into his own net, but didn’t have much chance to show off his set-piece prowess
7 Schar: Kept Sterling quiet for most of the game, and made a fantastic sliding challenge to deny Felix in the final ten minutes
6 Botman: Wasn’t his most composed performance of the season, although he still made a couple of important challenges
6 Targett: Got the nod to start ahead of Burn, but wasn’t really able to get forward as he would have liked
7 Anderson: Started the game superbly down the left, setting up Gordon’s opener, but wasn’t quite able to sustain those standards
6 Guimaraes: Had to play in a deeper role with Longstaff unavailable – did nothing wrong, but the position doesn’t really play to his strengths
7 Gordon: Opened his Magpies account with a neat close-range finish and always looked a threat when he broke into the box
5 Almiron: Wasted three excellent opportunities to score a Newcastle second in the first half as his shooting radar went awry
6 Isak: Curled a decent effort over in the bar in the first half, but never really threatened from inside the 18-yard box
8 SAINT-MAXIMIN: Was at the heart of all of Newcastle’s best moves in the first half as he broke purposefully down the left.
