How did the players fare in Sunderland’s 2-0 defeat at Kenilworth Road?
LUTON (3-5-2):
Horvath 6; Osho 7, Lockyer 8, Bell 7; Drameh 6, Mpanzu 6, Nakamba 7, Clark 7 (Campbell 83), DOUGHTY 8; Morris 7, Adebayo 6.
Subs (not used): Shea (gk), Potts, Berry, Burke, Onyedinma, Taylor.
SUNDERLAND (3-4-3):
5 Patterson: Didn’t have a chance with either of Luton’s goals, but didn’t claim many crosses and gave the ball away sloppily at the start of the second half
5 Hume: Made a couple of important clearances in his six-yard box, but couldn’t cope with Luton’s forwards
6 O’NIEN: Will not have had many tougher nights in his career – but his battling qualities came shining through. Made a couple of excellent goalline clearances
4 Gooch: Did his best in a centre-half role that hardly plays to his strengths, but was undone in the air on a number of occasions
5 Roberts: Made a couple of dribbles into the final third in the second half, but his shooting was well off target
5 Neil: Never stopped running, but wasn’t able to get his foot on the ball and take the sting out of the game
6 Ekwah: Has been a shining light in the last month and was the only Sunderland able to match Luton’s physicality
4 Clarke: It wasn’t a night when he was able to get into the game – failed to threaten with a couple of second-half shots
5 Amad: A disappointing end to his loan spell – had a couple of decent runs, but they came to nothing
4 Pritchard: Shrugged off Saturday’s injury issue to retain his place in the side, but didn’t hold on to the ball well enough on the rare moments Sunderland were in possession
4 Gelhardt: Ended his loan spell with a performance that summed it up – willing and committed, but lacking a cutting edge
Subs:
5 Alese (for Pritchard, 57): Returned from injury to provide a physical presence in the closing stages
5 Michut (for Gelhardt, 64): Wasn’t able to change the course of the game in the final half-hour
Huggins (for Gooch, 77)
Ba (for Neil, 77)
(not used): Bass (gk), Anderson, Lihadji.
Man Of The Match: ALFIE DOUGHTY – Luton’s wing-back was the source of his side’s threat from the flanks. His crosses caused a series of problems for the Sunderland defence.
