How did the players fare in Newcastle United's 2-0 defeat to Arsenal?
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
8 POPE: Made three excellent first-half saves to keep Newcastle in the game, the pick of which denied Martinelli
6 Trippier: Displayed his usual drive and energy, but was beaten on a couple of occasions by Martinelli’s pace
6 Schar: Struggled to keep tabs on the Arsenal attack, although was somewhat unfortunate to score an own goal
7 Botman: Kept Jesus quiet for most of the game and produced a couple of excellent last-ditch challenges in his own box
6 Burn: Fared reasonably well against the dangerous Saka, but didn’t always use the ball effectively when he had it
7 Willock: Made a series of dangerous breaks into the Arsenal box and saw a good first-half effort saved by Ramsdale
6 Guimaraes: Tried to keep Newcastle moving forward, but wasn’t able to shut down Odegaard in a defensive capacity
6 Joelinton: Asked some questions of the Arsenal defence, but was never really able to find space in the 18-yard box
7 Murphy: Fired a shot against the post in the opening two minutes and remained a threat down the right-hand side
6 Wilson: Led the line energetically, but wasn’t really able to break free of Gabriel in the 18-yard box
7 Isak: Always carried a threat from the left-hand side and came within inches of scoring when he headed against the post
Subs:
5 Almiron (for Murphy, 65): Wasn’t really a factor in the closing stages as Newcastle tried to get back into the game
Saint-Maximin (for Willock, 78)
Gordon (for Wilson, 78)
Anderson (for Joelinton, 81)
Targett (for Burn, 81)
(not used): Dubravka (gk), Dummett, Lewis, Manquillo.
ARSENAL (4-3-3):
Ramsdale 8; White 6, Gabriel 7, Kiwior 7, Zinchenko 6 (Tierney 61, 6); ODEGAARD 9 (Partey 80), Jorginho 7, Xhaka 7; Saka 6, Jesus 7, Martinelli 8 (Trossard 80).
Subs (not used): Turner (gk), Holding, Vieira, Nelson, Smith-Rowe, Nketiah.
Man Of The Match: MARTIN ODEGAARD – The Norwegian ran the game from the pocket of space between Newcastle’s midfield and back four.
