How did the players fare in Newcastle United's 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa?
ASTON VILLA (4-4-2):
Martinez 7; Young 7, Konsa 7, Mings 8, Moreno 8; Ramsey 8 (Chambers 85), McGinn 7, Luiz 7, Dendoncker 6; WATKINS 9 (Duran 90), Buendia 7.
Subs (not used): Olsen (gk), Sinisalo (gk), Carlos, Traore, Digne, Revan, Patterson.
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
6 POPE: Didn’t have a chance with either goal and made a couple of decent saves to prevent Watkins adding to his tally
3 Trippier: Was repeatedly pulled out of position as Villa caused a succession of problems down their left-hand side
4 Schar: Was part of the defensive problem down Newcastle’s right as the movement of Ramsey and Watkins caused him problems
4 Botman: Couldn’t keep tabs on Watkins as the Villa striker ran riot – was fighting a losing battle all afternoon
3 Burn: Was found wanting on a number of occasions, most notably when Watkins turned him to sweep home Villa’s second
4 Willock: Was given the run-around by Villa’s midfielders for most of his time on the field – wasn’t a factor in the final third
5 Guimaraes: Was forced to play much deeper than he would have wanted because of Longstaff’s absence, and his game suffered as a result
5 Joelinton: Covered a lot of ground in his central-midfield role, but it wasn’t a day when he came to the fore
4 Murphy: Made a couple of breaks down the right, but failed to find the target with a second-half shot
4 Isak: Toiled for no reward at all as the central striker in the first half, and was no more effective when moved wide in the second
3 Gordon: Was surprisingly named in the starting side after his outburst to Brentford, but did nothing to justify his promotion from the bench
Subs:
5 Almiron (for Gordon, 55): Added a bit of energy and drive in the closing stages – but shot into the side-netting when well placed
5 Wilson (for Murphy, 55): Couldn’t match the second-half impact he had at Brentford
4 Targett (for Burn, 67): Tried to get forward down the left late on, but delivered very little
4 Longstaff (for Willock, 67): Wasn’t able to change the course of the game in the final stages
Anderson (for Joelinton, 79)
(not used): Dubravka (gk), Manquillo, Lascelles, Ritchie.
Man Of The Match: OLLIE WATKINS – The Aston Villa striker scored two, and could easily have finished with four.
