How did the players fare in Sunderland's 1-1 draw with Luton Town?
SUNDERLAND (4-2-3-1):
6 Patterson: Doughty’s goal passed through a host of bodies, but Sunderland’s keeper will almost certainly feel he still should have done better
6 Hume: Didn’t give a lot away defensively, but wasn’t really a factor in terms of getting forward on the overlap
7 Ballard: Made some excellent challenges to prevent Luton’s forwards from breaking into the box – has been such an important player this season
8 Batth: Kept the dangerous Morris under wraps throughout the game and was always in the right place to deal with balls into the box
8 O’NIEN: Set the tone for Sunderland’s dogged display as he threw himself into a series of challenges and headers with characteristic relish
6 Neil: Kept trying to make things work and came within inches of scoring with a first-half effort that struck the post
6 Michut: Showed a willingness to get stuck in at the heart of midfield, but was never really able to get his foot on the ball and create anything
6 Roberts: Wasn’t able to create much as he struggled to find space down Sunderland’s right-hand side
5 Ba: Made the wrong choice on a number of occasions as he looked to break forward, and was taken off in the early stages of the second half
7 Clarke: Had some bright moments running at the Luton defence, particularly as things opened up in the second half
5 Gelhardt: Another afternoon where things didn’t really come off for the Leeds loanee – scuffed a poor second-half effort wide
Subs:
7 Amad (for Ba, 55): Swung the game in Sunderland’s direction as he successfully converted the spot-kick he secured himself
Pritchard (for Hume, 71)
Gooch (for Michut, 71)
Ekwah (for Gelhardt, 71)
Bennette (for Neil, 71)
(not used): Bass (gk), Lihadji.
LUTON (3-4-1-2):
Horvath 7; Osho 7, Lockyer 7, Bell 6; Drameh 7, Nakamba 6, Berry 6 (Clark 56, 5), DOUGHTY 8 (Onyedinma 74); Campbell 6; Morris 5, Adebayo 6 (Woodrow 83).
Subs (not used): Shea (gk), Lansbury, Burke, Taylor.
Man Of The Match: LUKE O’NIEN – Sunderland’s talisman once again led by example as he thundered into a series of crucial tackles.
