How did the players fare in Newcastle United's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City?
MAN CITY (4-1-4-1):
Ederson 6; Walker 7, Akanji 7, Dias 7, Ake 7; Rodri 8; FODEN 8, de Bruyne 6 (Silva 65, 7), Gundogan 6, Grealish 6; Haaland 6.
Subs (not used): Ortega (gk), Lewis, Stones, Laporte, Phillips, Palmer, Mahrez, Alvarez.
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
6 Pope: Didn’t have a chance with either goal and made a good late save to prevent Foden from scoring a third for City
7 Trippier: Seemed to enjoy the battle with his England colleague, Grealish, and set up Wilson for a first-half chance that should have been converted
7 LASCELLES: Was thrown in at the deep end as he made only his second league start of the season, but handled himself well against Haaland
7 Botman: Helped ensure Haaland was unable to run riot as he won a succession of headers and positioned himself well
5 Burn: Endured a torrid time against Foden, and while he stuck to his task, he is starting to look like a centre-half playing out of position
6 Guimaraes: Always wanted the ball at the heart of midfield, but was generally crowded out by the sky-blue shirts around him
6 Longstaff: Was Newcastle’s best player for much of the first half, but wasted a good opportunity as he delayed before getting a shot away
5 Joelinton: Got himself dragged into some unnecessary fouls – one of which means he will now be suspended for the next two games
5 Almiron: Displayed his usual levels of energy and commitment, but never threatened to be a factor in the final third
4 Wilson: His chronic lack of form was vividly illustrated by the first-half miskick that resulted in an excellent opening being spurned
5 Gordon: His first Newcastle start proved a forgettable one as he trod on the ball while attempting to shoot in the first half
Subs:
6 Saint-Maximin (for Gordon, 62): Got into some decent positions at the back post, although wasn’t really able to make the most of them
7 Isak (for Wilson, 62): Added some attacking impetus from the bench once again, and saw a couple of decent efforts blocked
6 Willock (for Longstaff, 62): Delivered a couple of dangerous cross from the right-hand side of the box
Murphy (for Almiron, 77)
Targett (for Burn, 86)
(not used): Dubravka (gk), Manquillo, Ritchie, Anderson.
Man Of The Match: PHIL FODEN – The England international was the game’s most threatening attacking presence as he repeatedly got away from Burn down Man City’s right-hand side.
