How did the players fare in Newcastle's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Wembley?
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
7 KARIUS: Was beaten by the deflection for Man Utd’s second, but made good saves from Weghorst, Rashford and Fernandes
5 Trippier: Got out of position in the build-up to Rashford’s deflected goal and let himself down with some poor set-piece deliveries
6 Schar: Soldiered on despite suffering a nasty head-knock in the first half and won most of his aerial challenges
6 Botman: It wasn’t his fault that he inadvertently deflected Rashford’s shot past Karius – made a couple of important challenges
5 Burn: Struggled against the dangerous Antony – especially in the first half – and failed to hit the target with a decent headed chance
6 Guimaraes: Produced a couple of excellent touches as he returned from suspension, but never really looked like threatening the Man Utd goal
5 Longstaff: Couldn’t really influence the game in the first half and was taken off at half-time as part of Howe’s tactical reshuffle
6 Joelinton: Kept his composure after his first-half booking, but wasn’t particularly effective when forced to drop deep in the second half
5 Almiron: Covered a lot of ground, but failed to ask any serious questions in the final third of the field
4 Wilson: Hasn’t looked at his sharpest since returning from the World Cup, and was unable to get behind the Man Utd back four
5 Saint-Maximin: Wasted some good positions with some poor decision-making, but forced De Gea into a smart save with a first-half shot
Subs:
7 Isak (for Longstaff, 46): Made a difference after his half-time introduction by running directly at the Man Utd defence
Murphy (for Saint-Maximin, 78)
Willock (for Guimaraes, 78)
Ritchie (for Wilson, 90)
Anderson (for Almiron, 90)
(not used): Gillespie (gk), Targett, Manquillo, Lascelles.
MAN UTD (4-2-3-1):
De Gea 6; Dalot 6 (Wan-Bissaka 46, 6), Martinez 7, Varane 7, Shaw 6; CASEMIRO 8, Fred 6 (Sabitzer 69, 6); Antony 7 (Sancho 82), Fernandes 7, Rashford 7 (Maguire 88); Weghorst 7 (McTominay 69, 5).
Subs (not used): Heaton (gk), Lindelof, Malacia, Garnacho.
Man Of The Match: CASEMIRO – The Manchester United midfielder mopped up everything in front of his back four, and opened the scoring with a thumping header.
