TOMMY Smith has been rewarded for his fine form, with the defender signing a new two-year deal at Middlesbrough.
Smith joined Boro as a free agent in the summer and initially arrived as cover for Isaiah Jones, who was first choice right wing-back in Chris Wilder’s system.
But after Michael Carrick replaced Wilder and changed formation to a back four, Smith quickly established himself as first choice right back and hasn’t missed a minute under the current head coach.
He’s been an integral figure in the transformation on Teesside and is a key man off the pitch, with his experience and leadership qualities important in the dressing room.

His contract was due to expire in the summer but has now been extended.
Carrick said: "We're delighted to have Tommy on a longer contract.
"He's done fantastically well for us and he's an important figure for us both on the pitch and in the dressing room."
