JEWISON BENNETTE will be part of the Sunderland squad that travels to Rotherham United tomorrow, having shaken off the calf problem that kept him out of last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Bristol City.
Bennette has been receiving treatment on his calf, and has been passed fit to travel to the New York Stadium.
The Costa Rica international has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season, although his only start came in the FA Cup third-round victory over Shrewsbury Town.
“Jewison had a kick on the calf at the weekend, which is why he didn't make the squad, but he was training with us today, so he'll be involved in some capacity at Rotherham,” said Black Cats head coach Tony Mowbray.
Lynden Gooch and Niall Huggins are both stepping up their training programmes this week, but neither will be considered for the Rotherham game and they are also expected to sit out Saturday’s trip to Coventry City.
“Niall is back training, but he’s a week or so away (from being in contention),” said Mowbray. “We want him to train regularly, whether it's with us or the Under-21s, depending on the schedule that we have.
“Lynden has had his boots on today, so that will probably be another week or two away. But that's a boost for us to see him with his boots on.
“We've got one or two knocks from the weekend, but we think they'll be alright, we'll do a fitness test before we go.”
