ALEXANDER ISAK was forced to miss Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw with West Ham because of the Premier League’s concussion protocols – but the striker should be back in the fold for next weekend’s trip to Bournemouth.

Isak was left concussed after James Ward Prowse’s free-kick struck him in the face in the closing stages of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final success against Southampton.

The Swede has been unable to train since, and was not considered for selection for this afternoon’s game.

However, he is set to return to training this week and should be part of the squad that travels to the Vitality Stadium next weekend.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “Unfortunately, we had to follow concussion protocols with him, so immediately after the (Southampton) game we knew we would be without him today.

“It was a big blow for us because he’s looked so good when he’s come onto the pitch in recent weeks. He feels good, he feels fine, and I don’t think there’s any issues with him. I’m sure he’ll be fine for next weekend.”

Isak’s absence meant Callum Wilson played for the full 90 minutes of this afternoon’s draw, and the England international broke a scoring duck that stretched back to October when he raced on to Sean Longstaff’s early through ball and slotted a clinical finish past Lukasz Fabianski.

However, he was unable to convert a similar chance in the second half, with Nayef Aguerd recovering to make a crucial last-ditch tackle.

Howe said: “I’m really pleased for Callum that he scored the first goal. It wasn’t just scoring, it was the manner of it – one-against-one and the pace in behind. It was a really good pass, and a really good finish on his left side.

“He’ll probably go home tonight and think about the ones that he didn’t take, but I think a hat-trick of good chances is great news for Callum. He’s in the right places and he showed his pace in behind their backline. I was really pleased with him today.”
