SEAN LONGSTAFF has dedicated his two goals in tonight’s Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg win over Southampton to Newcastle United’s long-suffering supporters – with the Magpies’ success having secured a first major final appearance in 24 years.

Longstaff scored twice before the interval as the Magpies claimed a 3-1 aggregate win to claim a place at Wembley on February 26.

The North Shields-born midfielder is a boyhood Newcastle fan, and knows just how much this evening’s success will mean to the whole of Tyneside.

“It's a really special night, not just for me, but for everyone in Newcastle. It has been so long since a night like this. It's unbelievable.

"All the energy left my body after I celebrated. Luckily I've scored a few tonight, but it's not about me, it's about the team and the manager has put a great one together.

"It's amazing what can happen in a year. If you said 12 months ago that something like this could happen, then people would laugh at you.

"It's special and really emotional. We don't want to stop, we want to keep going, and this is just the start."

Dan Burn was another of Newcastle’s homegrown heroes, with the Blyth-born full-back having scored his side’s winner in their quarter-final victory over Leicester.

Burn played an important role in both legs of the semi-final as part of a Magpies rearguard that restricted Southampton to just a handful of goalscoring opportunities.

“It's hard to sum it up,” said the left-back. “I've never played in an atmosphere like that. I was getting emotional and had to hold myself together.

“We had to hold our nerve after letting them back in. It was disappointing to concede, he struck it well to be fair. They were always going to come at us second half, but we stuck it out.”
