CONOR GALLAGHER is willing to consider a move to Newcastle United if Chelsea decide his time at Stamford Bridge is up later today.
Gallagher was offered the opportunity to join Everton in a £40m deal yesterday, but concluded that a switch to Goodison Park was not the right move at this stage of his career.
However, sources in London claim figures close to Gallagher have indicated that the England international will react differently if Chelsea indicate a preference for him to move on today and Newcastle table a formal offer to take him to St James’ Park.
Gallagher, who would ideally like to remain with the Blues, is set to hold talks with senior Chelsea officials, including head coach Graham Potter, this morning.
He has been a regular member of Potter’s first-team squad this season, making 18 Premier League appearances, but faces increased competition for a starting spot in the wake of the Blues’ January spending spree.
Chelsea are set to spend more than £100m on another midfielder today, with Argentinian World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez on the brink of a deadline-day move from Benfica.
Newcastle are waiting in the wings, and are ready to make a strong push to land Gallagher if there is a chance of him leaving west London.
The Magpies’ recruitment have been strong admirers of the 22-year-old for quite a while now, and see him as an ideal addition.
Newcastle are set to lose a midfielder in the next few hours, with Jonjo Shelvey on the verge of completing a permanent move to Nottingham Forest.
The Magpies have also held initial discussions with Sheffield United over Sander Berge, but regard Gallagher as a more appealing target at this stage.
