EDDIE HOWE has praised the ‘strength of Joelinton’s character’ after the Brazilian scored Newcastle United’s winner in this evening’s 1-0 win over Southampton.
Joelinton missed a golden opportunity at the start of the second half when he blazed over from the edge of the six-yard box with the scores still level.
The Brazilian also saw a first-half effort controversially ruled out for offside, but while he could have allowed his head to drop, he made sure he was in the right place at the right time to settle things in the second period.
Joelinton turned home from close range after Alexander Isak crossed from the right to ensure Newcastle will take a one-goal advantage to St James’ Park for next week’s second leg.
Howe said: “He’s (Joelinton) mentally very strong. His own journey at Newcastle would sort of epitomise that really.
“He’s someone who has real resilience and doesn’t get flustered either way, in success or more disappointing moments.
“When we needed him again, he was on the spot from Alex’s really good play out wide. I’m really pleased for Joe whenever he scores because he feeds off that confidence that goals bring. I thought he played very well tonight.”
