How did the players fare in Newcastle’s 1-0 semi-final victory over Southampton?
SOUTHAMPTON (4-2-3-1):
Bazunu 5; WALKER-PETERS 6 (Bednarek 88), Lyanco 5, Caleta-Car 4, Salisu 5; Diallo 6 (Lavia 82), Alcaraz 4; Orsic 5 (Adams 57, 6), Ward-Prowse 5, Djenepo 4 (Armstrong 45, 5); Mara 4 (Edozie 57, 5).
Subs (not used): Caballero (gk), Maitland-Niles, Perraud, Elyounoussi.
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
9 POPE: Made two crucial second-half saves to keep the scoresheet blank – for the second game in a row, when Newcastle needed him, he answered their call
8 Trippier: Was Newcastle’s main attacking outlet in the first half and set the tone with some thumping challenges
8 Schar: Marked Mara out of the game and was always in the right position to deal with crosses into the box
8 Botman: Continues to impress at the heart of the Newcastle defence and was a major factor in another impressive defensive display
8 Burn: Won some important challenges and just about did enough to put off Armstrong for Southampton’s disallowed strike
6 Guimaraes: Generally used the ball well, although his threaded through balls didn’t really come off
6 Longstaff: Covered a lot of ground at the heart of midfield, but wasted a good position by shooting over
5 Willock: Got into some decent positions, but wasted two excellent first-half opportunities by blazing shots over the bar
6 Almiron: Displayed his usual energy down the right-hand side, but gave the ball cheaply on a number of occasions in the first half
5 Wilson: His work rate cannot be faulted, but this was another game where Newcastle’s number nine never really looked like scoring
7 Joelinton: Made up for a really poor miss at the start of the second half by being in the right place to turn home Newcastle’s winner
Subs:
6 Saint-Maximin (for Willock, 67): Drew the foul that led to Caleta-Car’s dismissal for a second yellow card late on
8 Isak (for Wilson, 67): Made an immediate impact as he burst past his opponent to set up Joelinton’s winner
(not used): Darlow (gk), Manquillo, Lewis, Lascelles, Ritchie, Anderson, Murphy.
Man Of The Match: NICK POPE – Is Newcastle’s goalkeeper ever going to be beaten? His two second-half saves were the key to the Magpies winning the game.
