NEWCASTLE UNITED will make another move for Anthony Gordon in the final week of the transfer window, and are hoping the current upheaval at Everton will increase their chances of pulling off a deal for the England Under-21 international.

Newcastle’s recruitment team made Gordon a leading target in the summer, with Everton rejecting a formal offer for their midfielder from the Magpies at that stage.

Gordon enjoyed a breakthrough season at Goodison Park last term, and while he has failed to make as much of impact in the current campaign, Everton’s struggles close to the foot of the Premier League have undoubtedly been a major factor in his fluctuating form.

The Newcastle hierarchy remain convinced the 21-year-old is one of the most exciting attacking-midfield prospects in the country, and Eddie Howe is aware of the ongoing attempts to lure Gordon, who is valued at around £35m, to St James’ Park this month.

Newcastle officials were always intending to make another approach before the transfer window closes next Tuesday evening, and are hoping yesterday’s dismissal of Frank Lampard could improve their prospects of prising Gordon from Merseyside.

Lampard had previously spoken of his firm determination to hold on to the midfielder this month, with Everton set for a battle against the drop in the remaining four months of the season.

His departure has created something of a vacuum, and while Marcelo Bielsa has been touted as a potential managerial appointment in the last 24 hours, Everton majority owner Farhad Moshiri could opt to cash in while Gordon’s stock remains high.

The Liverpool-born youngster, who is also known to be interesting Chelsea, is contracted to Everton until the summer of 2025.

Newcastle look set to miss out on one of the targets they have been pursuing in the last few weeks, with Real Valladolid youngster Ivan Fresneda seemingly on the verge of joining Arsenal.

The Magpies have held talks over the 18-year-old right-back, but Arsenal were always in pole position to seal a deal and on the verge of confirming Fresneda as their latest addition.
