EDDIE Howe admits he doesn't think there'll have been too many punts on Dan Burn to open the scoring for Newcastle United against Leicester City - but says the whole dressing room shared the defender's delight after he sent the Magpies into the last four of the Carabao Cup.

Burn's brilliant right-footed finish set United on their way on Tuesday night, with Joelinton added a second to see off the resilient Foxes.

For Burn, it was a magical moment, his first goal for the club he's supported since he was a boy. And he celebrated in style with a dance in the dressing room in front of the Sky Sports cameras - to the surprise and delight of his head coach.

“Do you know what? I was actually asking him to give a speech and he stood up and danced," laughed Howe.

"He's a great character and he's added real leadership and experience to the group. He's a really well-liked member of the dressing room, so when someone as popular as him has a moment like that, it's nice for everyone to share it with him."

When it was put to Howe that Burn must prefer dancing to speaking, the head coach laughed: "Well, obviously - and he moves quite well for a big man."

Newcastle were dominant against Leicester but opportunities had come and gone before Burn finally broke through and fired the hosts ahead at the Gallowgate End.

Howe said: “It was a brilliant moment for him and the supporters. If you're a betting man, there's no way you're ever putting money on Dan Burn's right foot opening the scoring in any game.

“He missed a header that he'll be disappointed, probably, not to score with, but the goal was actually a thing of beauty.

“We won the ball high up the pitch and he's driven in with the ball, and what a finish with his right foot because it was a tight angle, so I'm delighted for him.

“He's here with his family and obviously his story is well-known, but it's nights and moments like that that make football what it is."
