How did the players fare in Newcastle United’s goalless draw with Arsenal?
ARSENAL (4-2-3-1):
Ramsdale 7; White 6 (Tomiyasu 75), Saliba 7, Gabriel 7, Zinchenko 6; Partey 7, Xhaka 6; Saka 7, ODEGAARD 8, Martinelli 6; Nketiah 6.
Subs (not used): Turner (gk), Tierney, Holding, Vieira, Lokonga, Elneny, Marquinhos, Butler-Oyedeji.
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
8 Pope: Dealt with Arsenal’s deliveries into the area and produced a superb late save to deny Nketiah
7 Trippier: Kept Martinelli quiet down Arsenal’s left, but for the second game in a row, the standard of his set-piece delivery was mixed
7 Schar: Dominated the heart of Newcastle’s 18-yard box and threw himself into a couple of crucial sliding challenges
8 Botman: Is there anything that can ruffle the Dutchman? Once again oozed class and authority at the heart of the Magpies’ back four
8 BURN: Recovered from a difficult opening ten minutes to successfully shackle the hugely-dangerous Saka
8 Guimaraes: Performed a hugely-important role preventing Arsenal’s central midfielders from breaking forward
7 Longstaff: Covered an awful lot of ground at the heart of midfield, but didn’t always use the ball effectively when he had it
6 Willock: Riled the Arsenal fans by limping his way through the second half, but helped Newcastle shut down their opponents
6 Almiron: Wasn’t really a threat in the attacking third, but performed a valuable defensive role as he helped protect Trippier
6 Wilson: Ran himself ragged trying to close down Arsenal’s defenders, but failed to make contact as he slid in to try to convert Almiron’s cross
7 Joelinton: Never stopped charging around the field despite suffering a couple of knocks – the improvement in his defensive work in the last 12 months has been staggering
Subs:
6 Wood (for Wilson, 67): Won a couple of headed knock-downs, but was unable to make a real difference in the closing stages
5 Murphy (for Almiron, 67): Did the defensive work that was asked of him, but needed to bust a gut to try to reach a Wood knock-down
Saint-Maximin (for Willock, 87)
(not used): Dubravka (gk), Lewis, Manquillo, Lascelles, Ritchie, Anderson.
Man Of The Match: DAN BURN – The Newcastle full-back could have folded after Saka started so brightly, but instead, he knuckled down to make one of the most in-form attackers in the country out of the game.
