Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is remaining tight-lipped on a possible January deal for Middlesbrough midfielder Massimo Luongo.

Luongo is out of contract at Boro next month and is set to leave the club having not made a single appearance since joining on a free transfer in September.

Ahead of his deal expiring, Boro have allowed the 30-year-old to explore other options and the former Sheffield Wednesday man this week linked up with League One Ipswich on a trial.

But Town boss McKenna, who knows Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick well with the pair having worked together at Manchester United, wasn't giving anything away when pressed on whether the Tractor Boys will sign Luongo.

McKenna told TWTD: “He (Luongo) has been with us for the last few days. I think in general the policy always has to be to respect the other clubs. Massimo Luongo is a Middlesbrough player, is contracted with Middlesbrough.

“Of course, we have a good relationship with Middlesbrough and I know Massimo as well, so that’s been useful over the last few days, but he’s a Middlesbrough player and at the moment his future is contracted with them and is still in their hands.

“I think regarding that and any other speculation, I don’t think it’s fair and right [to talk about] players who are under contract with other clubs.”

Asked when his deal expires, McKenna, who knows Luongo from their time together at Tottenham's academy, said: “I think that’s for Middlesbrough to make that decision and then announce that decision in due course.”
