Massimo Luongo is on trial at Ipswich Town as he nears the end of his Middlesbrough contract.

The 30-year-old midfielder is set to leave Boro when his short-term deal on Teesside expires in January.

Luongo was signed by Chris Wilder in September as a free agent on a short term deal but hasn't played a minute for Boro and has only twice featured in a matchday squad.

He's well down the midfield pecking order and with Boro looking to strengthen in that department in January, the former Sheffield Wednesday man won't be offered an extension.

With that in mind, Carrick has allowed Luongo to link up with League One Ipswich on trial this week.

The midfielder is training with the Tractor Boys, who he played for early in his career during a brief loan spell.

Carrick and Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna are good friends having worked together at Manchester United.
