KIERAN TRIPPIER and Callum Wilson are back in training with Newcastle United, although the duo are unlikely to feature in Saturday’s friendly with Spanish side Rayo Vallecano.
Despite having only returned from World Cup duty in Qatar on Sunday in the wake of England’s quarter-final defeat to France, Trippier and Wilson were both back on the training pitches at the Magpies’ Darsley Park base yesterday.
Nick Pope, Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes are all yet to return to training following their own World Cup involvement, but it is anticipated the trio will all be back with Newcastle’s first-team group before the start of next week.
None of the quintet are expected to feature in Saturday’s warm-up game with Ray Vallecano at St James’, but there is a chance Trippier and Wilson could feature in Tuesday’s return to competitive action when the Magpies will host Bournemouth in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
The England duo both got game time for Gareth Southgate’s side in Qatar, but neither was involved in Saturday’s defeat in the last eight.
It is anticipated that all five of Newcastle’s World Cup players will be available when the Premier League programme resumes with a trip to Leicester City on Boxing Day.
With Pope not expected to feature at the weekend, or in the League Cup game against Bournemouth, Loris Karius is being primed to make his senior Newcastle debut.
Karius joined the Magpies as a free agent in September to help cover for Karl Darlow’s injury absence, and started the friendly win over Al-Hilal during Newcastle’s recent trip to Saudi Arabia.
“I’m a professional, I want to play every game,” said Karius. “That’s what we’re here for, but I’m just preparing myself. There’s another pre-season game before Bournemouth, so I don’t want to think that far ahead.
“We’ll be training to keep the level as high as possible, and making sure if I get the call, I’m ready and go in with a good feeling.”
