Newcastle United's Callum Wilson sat out of England training again on Wednesday as the striker recovers from a minor muscle strain.

Wilson missed training on Monday and after a squad rest day on Tuesday again sat out of Wednesday's session.

Wilson has made two appearances from the bench so far in the World Cup and England medical staff were understandably keen not to take any risks with the striker ahead of Saturday's quarter-final against France.

Declan Rice also missed training through illness. The 23-year-old midfielder has started all four games for Gareth Southgate’s side in Qatar but was absent from the session at Al Wakrah Sports Complex.

There were 22 players involved in the session.

Ben White left last week due to a personal issue and Raheem Sterling headed back to England ahead of the last-16 win against Senegal due to a family matter.

Meanwhile, Newcastle defender Fabian Schar is heading for home after Switzerland's heavy last 16 defeat to Portugal on Tuesday night.

Schar was one of three Switzerland players suffering with illness ahead of the game, according to boss Murat Yakin.

He said: “Unfortunately, (Silvan) Widmer had a cold. Same for Schar. He was out of breath at half-time.

"(Nico) Elvedi also had a fever. He was not fully ready. Schar wasn’t himself either.”
