Riley McGree wants to carry his Middlesbrough momentum into the World Cup and says he's excited to "make memories" with Australia in the coming weeks.

McGree signed off for the World Cup break in quite stunning fashion, scoring a brilliant equaliser for Boro at Norwich City, before Matt Crooks scored a stoppage time winner.

The brilliant bicycle kick was unsurprisingly doing the rounds on social media over the weekend but it's not the first time McGree has gone viral, the midfielder having earned himself a FIFA Puskas nomination back in 2018 when he scored a stunning scorpion kick for the Newcastle Jets.

Reflecting on his latest wondergoal, McGree said in a Q&A with the Socceroos Instagram page: "It's a bit of a blur and I didn't quite realise the kind of goal that I scored until afterwards when I saw it. But it was good to start a comeback and get the three points in the end as well."

McGree has quickly established himself as a key player for Michael Carrick and the head coach talked up the midfielder's importance after the win at Norwich.

McGree has since linked up with the Australia squad and landed in Qatar ahead of the Socceroos opener against France next Tuesday evening.

The Boro man said: “It’s a huge experience.

"It’s my first World Cup so I’m just taking everything in, taking the small things and the big things as much as I can and making memories.

“It's been good here. We've obviously trained and had a few games here in Doha in the past so it’s a little bit easier than normal (to cope with the conditions). So far, so good.”

McGree was asked about the chances of adding another superb goal to his collection during the World Cup.

He said: "I'd love to but you don't really think about these things

"They kind of just happen as they come. Just to get out on the pitch and to be involved would be awesome."
