Cleveland Police made nine arrests during the Tees-Wear derby between Middlesbrough and Sunderland at the Riverside Stadium.

Disorder broke out after the game where Boro completed a 1-0 victory over the Black Cats with a number of supporters looking to cross the netted divide between the two sets of supporters. Coins and bottles were thrown at police officers after the game.

All nine men that were arrested we between the ages of 18 and 42. They are due to appear at Teesside Magistrates Court on Tuesday 20th September.

Chief Inspector Darren Bainbridge praised other fans behaviour during the breakout of incidents as he said: “We would like to thank the Middlesbrough and Sunderland fans who attended the fixture at the Riverside Stadium for their support and patience whilst we dealt with some incidents of disorder.

“We recognise that the vast majority of people attending the fixture were genuine fans who simply wanted to enjoy the game with the families and friends.

“There were, however, pockets of disorder which resulted in arrests and officers having to wear protective equipment. Further enquiries will not be carried out including reviewing footage and this may result in further action being taken.”

Anyone with information regarding the disorder is being asked to report to Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
