How did the players fare in Newcastle's goalless draw with Crystal Palace?
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
8 POPE: Made some important saves, the pick of which saw him keep out Edouard’s second-half effort
8 Trippier: His set-piece delivery caused Palace problems all afternoon and he was defensively excellent throughout
7 Schar: Won some important headers against the Palace attack and provided a useful presence in the opposition box
7 Botman: Was defensively secure all afternoon and produced the header across goal that ended with the ball in the Palace net
6 Targett: Had a difficult first half against the dangerous Ayew, but stuck to his task manfully and made some important tackles
6 Willock: Was perhaps unfortunate to have been penalised when he collided with Guaita, but wasted a good late chance
6 Longstaff: Always made himself available to take possession, but the quality of his use of the ball was mixed
8 Joelinton: Set the tone for a positive Newcastle display with a series of charging runs and muscular interceptions
7 Almiron: Round himself into ground chasing and harrying the Palace defenders and almost scored with a shot that was deflected onto the post
5 Isak: Should have done much better with the glorious early opportunity that saw him clean through on the Palace goal
6 Fraser: Got into some promising positions down the left-hand side, but was never quite able to make the most of them
Subs:
5 Murphy (for Almiron, 70): Wasn’t able to make much of an impact in the closing stages of the game
6 Anderson (for Fraser, 70): Added some energy and physicality to the Magpies midfield after coming off the bench
Burn (for Targett, 79)
Wood (for Isak, 90)
(not used): Darlow (gk), Lascelles, Lewis, Manquillo, Ritchie.
CRYSTAL PALACE (4-3-3):
GUAITA 8; Ward 7, Andersen 8, Guehi 7, Mitchell 6 (Clyne 62, 5); Schlupp 5, Doucoure 7, Eze 5 (Olise 62, 5); Zaha 6, Mateta 4 (Edouard 62, 5), Ayew 7.
Subs (not used): Johnstone (gk), Milivojevic, Hughes, Ebiowei, Richards, Riedewald.
Man Of The Match: VICENTE GUAITA – Made some crucial saves and dominated his 18-yard box in the face of some strong Newcastle pressure.
