NEWCASTLE made it through to the third round of the Carabao Cup thanks to a 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers.
How did the players score in their performance at Prenton Park?
NUFC XI (4-3-3):
7 Darlow – Did well when called upon. Came out to collect crosses and was brave in a challenges, particularly with one against Hemmings which he won.
6 Krafth – A good showing up until his injury in the first half. A big blow for the Swede.
7 Lascelles – A dominant display at the back. Pulled one back for Newcastle at an important time in the game. Battled on despite trouble with a bloody nose.
6 Dummett – Playing at centre-back which isn’t his primary position but shored things up when necessary.
6 Targett – A quiet game for the left-back. The build up to the goal came from the left and he was dragged off at half-time. Perhaps not quite fit.
8 Willock – A good display from Willock. Linked up play, won his battles and was a threat going forward.
5 Longstaff – A number of sloppy passes in midfield could have proved costly and looked overran in the midfield at times.
8 Anderson – Provided plenty of threat going forward and always wanted to make things happen in the number ten role.
7 Murphy – Provided plenty of threat on both flanks and perhaps should have done better with two chances in the first half.
6 Ritchie – Kept things ticking over when he cut inside from the right but there was not a lot of end product from the winger.
7 Wood – Won his battles, held the ball up well and took his goal when he got on the end of Trippier’s cross.
Subs:
8 Trippier 38’ – Swung the game back in Newcastle’s favour. Both of their goals came from his deliveries and he was an experienced head at the back under pressure.
6 Lewis 45’ – Showed plenty of energy to get up and down the left hand side. A good outing from the substitute.
6 Botman 70’ – Kept Tranmere out during a spell of pressure late on.
Joelinton 70’ – Provided much needed energy when legs were tiring in the second half.
Subs not used: Gillespie, Trippier, Botman, Joelinton, Lewis, Fernandez, Manquillo, Almiron, Bruno G
Tranmere (5-3-2): Hewelt 8; Dacres-Cogley 7, Byrne 7, Turnbull 8, Jameson 6 (Lewis 70’), Bristow 7; O’Connor 6, Nolan 6 (Hawkes 58’), McAlear 6; Hemmings 7, Nevitt 7
Subs: Doohan, Fisher, Hockenhull, Merrie, Hawkes, Hughes, Lomax, Lewis, Taylor
Man of the Match: Kieran Trippier – He wasn’t on for the full 90 minutes but played a big role in turning the game around for Eddie Howe’s side.
