REPORTS from Central America have suggested Sunderland are set to pay just over £1m to sign Costa Rica international Jewison Bennette.
The Black Cats have reportedly agreed a deal with Costa Rican side Club Sport Herediano that will see 18-year-old Bennette move to England and sign a four-year deal on Wearside.
Alex Neil was non-committal about the situation when questioned during yesterday’s pre-match press conference ahead of this evening’s game at Sheffield United, but it is understood that talks have taken place over Bennette, who became Costa Rica’s youngest-ever international when he made his senior debut for his national side at the age of just 17.
It has been reported in the Central American media that Sunderland will pay $1.3m (around £1.07m) for Bennette, a winger who has claimed two goals and one assist in his four appearances in the Costa Rican top-flight so far this season.
Speaking yesterday, Neil said: “I can’t tell you anything. You’ve just told me his name, maybe you know more than me. I’m not trying to be awkward, but what do you want me to say about it? There’s nothing to say until something happens – or if something happens.”
