ENGLAND star and Whitby born Beth Mead is currently leading the bookmakers odds to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year after the Women’s triumph in the European Championships.
The Yorkshire winger helped the Three Lions on their way to glory at Wembley beating Germany 2-1 in the final. She also picked up two individual honours winning the Golden Boot for her six goal haul as well as the Player of the Tournament.
Speaking about winning the Player of the Tournament Award, Mead said: “Mad – I didn’t expect it. The guy pulled me over and I was like, ‘oh God what I have done now?!’ Normally in trouble for something!
“But he said ‘you’re player of the tournament’. I was like…I still think I’m dreaming.”
When it was put to her that she was a trailblazer and an icon, the Arsenal winger said: “I’m just Beth Mead! It doesn’t sound right!”
England won their first major honour since 1996 at Wembley with Sarina Weigmann leading the team through their hugely successful campaign.
