NEWCASTLE UNITED suffered a last-gasp defeat as they finished with ten men in their pre-season friendly with Benifca.

The Magpies went down 3-2 in the Estadio da Luz, meaning that Benfica claimed the Eusebio Cup.

Benfica's late winner came moments after Joelinton was sent off for a second yellow card after appearing to stamp on an opponent.

The incident sparked a furious reaction from the Newcastle bench, and members of the two coaching staffs had to be separated as tempers boiled over in the Lisbon heat.

Benfica claimed the lead in the first half as Goncalo Ramos headed home from a corner.

Newcastle equalised when Miguel Almiron, who was a late addition to the starting side after Jacob Murphy dropped out, found the net after being set up by Kieran Trippier.

Alejandro Grimaldo restored Benfica's lead with an excellent free-kick, but Newcastle levelled again when Almiron claimed his second goal of the night following another assist from Trippier.

The Magpies changed all 11 of their players at the interval, with Jonjo Shelvey having to be replaced by Matty Longstaff in the 75th minute after suffering what appeared to be a knee injury.

Benfica's winner came in the 89th minute when Henrique Pereira Araujo fired home from close range.
