NEWCASTLE United defender Emil Krafth has signed a one-year contract extension at the club keeping him on Tyneside until the summer of 2024.

The 27-year-old’s deal was due to expire next summer but the Swedish defender has decided to extend his stay at the club for a further year following positive talks with the club’s hierarchy.

Since signing in the summer of 2019, Krath has gone on to make 62 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Under Eddie Howe, he was a regular starter in the absence of Kieran Trippier who suffered a broken metatarsal. In that time, the Magpies won five of their seven remaining league games.

Howe added: "I'm very pleased Emil has extended his stay with us. He made an excellent contribution to the team last season and he continues to add valuable strength to us."

Krafth said: "I'm very, very happy to extend my contract here - me and my family love to live here - and continue with the journey we started with the club. I'm really looking forward to the future at the club."
