DWIGHT GAYLE does not have a future at Newcastle United despite Championship interest in securing his services having stalled.
While Eddie Howe continues to pursue potential additions, he remains keen to trim further fringe players from his squad following the loan exits of Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick and Ciaran Clark.
Gayle was not part of the squad that travelled to Austria last week, but while there have been a number of inquiries over the 32-year-old this summer, the financial practicalities of a deal have proved an insurmountable obstacle so far.
Middlesbrough, Watford and West Brom have all held discussions over Gayle, but none of the clubs have been able to engineer a deal that would be acceptable to all parties involved.
Gayle, who still has two years of his current contract remaining, has been training away from Newcastle’s senior group with the Under-23s, and Howe clearly does not feel there is a way back into the first-team picture for the veteran striker.
“I’ve had a coupe of conversations with Dwight,” said the Magpies head coach, in an interview with the Shields Gazette. “At the end of last season, we had a good conversation and made him aware of the situation, for his own benefit, so he could take his career into its next phase.
“I was very honest with him. He was brilliant for the team last year, and he deserved the utmost respect and honesty from me about how the future lay for him, and I wanted to give him the best chance to find his next home.
"I really hope he goes on and has a great season next year, and I wish him nothing but success.”
