NEWCASTLE United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has revealed he only has three games to trigger a one year extension in his contract as he aims to be part of a resurgent feeling on Tyneside for the next two years.

The 30-year-old midfielder’s current deal expires next summer but looks set to earn another 12 months with the club.

Shelvey, who joined the club in 2016 from Swansea City, currently stands on 197 appearances in all competitions for the club meaning hitting the 200 mark would extend his contract until the summer of 2024.

He told The Daily Mail: "I’ve got three games to get another year, and hopefully I should do that this season. I mean, I’d be a bit worried if I didn’t.

"At the end of the day, you’re always playing for a new contract, and I’m not thick, I’m not getting younger. I’m 30 years of age and I look about 40!

"But you just want to be part of it. The only way for this club is up and a lot of people would want to be in my shoes."

Shelvey has been a key figure in Eddie Howe's side since he took over last year making 31 appearances in total in the Premier League.

Shelvey stint on Tyneside has seen some of the most turbulent times in the club's recent history as they were relegated in his first season at the club. Now, he wants to be part of the wave of optimism continues to sweep around the club after last year's takeover.

"The positivity around the club is great. We went through a really bad spell but it’s a really good place to be at the minute, the city is buzzing. My missus and kids love it up here."

Newcastle lost their final friendly of their tour of Austria after a 1-0 defeat to Mainz. Their next friendly game will take them to Portugal where they will face Benfica in a non-competitive game.

Meanwhile, the Magpies continue to be frustrated in their pursuit for a new striker. Chelsea frontman Armando Broja looks set to join Premier League rivals West Ham United on a permanent deal.
