AUSTRAILIAN midfielder Aaron Mooy is set for a move to Celtic after Middlesbrough had held discussions over a potential deal.

Strong reports suggested Boro were one of a number of Championship clubs to have held talks with the 31-year-old.

Mooy was a free agent after leaving Chinese side Shanghai Port after two years but is expected to sign a one-year deal at Celtic Park with an option for a further year. The deal should be completed later this week.

Mooy will link up with Australian manager Ange Postecoglu, who failed in his pursuit to sign Riley McGree in January who decided on a move to Teesside.

Boro are working to add to their squad for the start of the season and the potential signing of Mooy would represent a cheaper option having been a free agent. The former Huddersfield Town and Manchester City midfielder would have added depth after Boro allowed Martin Payero to head back to Argentina to seal a loan move to Boca Juniors.

Manager Chris Wilder said: “Everybody at the club understands that and I’m confident that we will do over the next week or next ten days because we have to and the season starts in two weeks time. We will do and we’ll have better players through the door at the club and that will make us stronger.”

Boro head to Morecambe tomorrow evening for their latest pre-season friendly tie with less than two weeks before the start of the season.
